Being a father means you can\u2019t remember the last time you slept well, but you can instantly tell the difference between \u201cI\u2019m crying because I fell\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m crying because the juice was in the wrong cup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It means you\u2019ve become an expert on strollers, thermometers, cartoons, and toddler mood swings\u2014
even though you once dreamed of being a rock star. Or at least sleeping in until 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019ve got four of them. Yes, on purpose. No, I\u2019m not crazy. Well, not completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every single day, I learn something new about myself.
Like the fact that I can read the same book out loud 12 times in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or that I\u2019m capable of not murdering someone who wakes me up at 5:40 AM with,\n\u201cWhat if a zebra had a cucumber for a tail?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That I can love these tiny humans beyond reason\u2014\nand still daydream about just 15 minutes alone in my forest cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A dad isn\u2019t a \u201chero,\u201d or a \u201cprovider,\u201d or the \u201chead of the family.\u201d
A dad is someone who\u2019s there. Every day.\nSometimes in slippers. Sometimes hanging by a thread.
But there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So here\u2019s to every father who\u2019s holding it together.
Who didn\u2019t run. Who isn\u2019t performing for social media.
Even if it feels like everything is held together by duct tape and caffeine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
